The Long Road to Freedom: The US Army and JuneteenthIn June 1865, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas. On June 19, Granger issued General Orders No. 3 declaring that “the people of Texas are informed in accordance with a Proclamation from the Executive of the United States all slaves are free.” Granger’s order had the effect of liberating 250,000 people who had been in enslaved in Texas. Juneteenth, alternatively known as Jubilee Day and Emancipation Day, became one of multiple local holidays commemorating the official end of slavery at different points throughout the South. |  |

The Invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944After four years of German occupation, the Allies under the command of American General Dwight D. Eisenhower, began the liberation of western Europe in Normandy, France. What were the German defenses like and how would the Allies break through them? How could 7,000 ships carrying 133,000 troops from all over Great Britain be coordinated for the invasion? How would both sides deal with the extreme tide changes of Normandy? This session will discuss the planning, the deception, and the execution of what we refer to today as simply “D-Day.” |  |
