Actively Learn in Schoology - Setup Guide
Class Set-Up and Pairing
In order to use Actively Learn through Schoology, you must follow the steps below to configure the use of the McGraw Hill apps in Schoology:
STEP 1: Set up McGraw Hill SSO
In Schoology, first install the McGraw Hill K-12 SSO app. This allows logging in to McGraw Hill through Schoology without needing to enter an additional username and password. This service has already been configured at the district level but teachers in grades 9 and 10 must take the final step to configure it for their classes.
- Launch Schoology
- Click the App icon in the top menu bar
- Click App Center
- Click on the McGraw Hill K-12 SSO app
- Click Install LTI 1.1 App
- Agree to the terms
- If given the choice, click "Install for Me"
- Select your classes and click "Install"
STEP 2: Pair your Schoology classes to your McGraw Hill/Actively Learn classes:
Note: If you plan to use course section linking for your classes, this should be done before completing the class pairing steps. However, additional classes can be added and paired at any time in the future as necessary.
1. Launch your Schoology Course
2. Select the Add Materials dropdown and choose the McGraw Hill LTI 1.3:... on the right.
3. Schoology will open a new window for you to pair your sections. This first screen is a list of your sections within Schoology
Note: You may see classes from other Courses on this screen. Do not pair these.
SMART PAIRING: You may see a Suggest Pairings button here instead, which can be used to automatically pair your classes. If you use this button, please confirm the accuracy of your class pairings and ensure you unpair any classes that belong to another course tile (see step 4). You may then skip to Step 7.
If you do not have this button, then your district does not have a matching identifier between your McGraw Hill Classes and your Schoology Classes. Please have your district IT team contact McGraw Hill to inquire about this new feature!
4. Select Pair next to only the classes that exist in the Course tile that you launched.
Important! – You MUST only click Pair next to the classes within the Course Tile that you launched.
Incorrect class pairings and any resulting issues are our number one support request.
5. In the next pop-up, you will see all of your classes within McGraw Hill. Locate the McGraw Hill class that matches with the Schoology section you chose in Step 4 and click the Select button.
6. If applicable, continue to pair each class until all classes for the Course Tile you launched have been paired. (Repeating Steps 4 & 5)
7. Once all of your sections (for this particular Course tile) are paired, click Save Pairings
STOP! – Take time to double check and ensure your class pairings are correct and accurate before moving on. Incorrect class pairings and any resulting issues is our number one support request. (See image below)
8. Click Create Primary Section.
An empty class is created on the McGraw Hill side with "Schoology Course" affixed to the title of your class. This will serve as the primary class for creating assignments, but no students will be rostered to this class in McGraw Hill.
Note: You must not archive this primary section or any of your regular classes within the McGraw Hill platform. Archiving either will prevent the integration from functioning properly.
9. Click Launch Primary Section to launch the LTI tool for the primary section.
10.You are now ready to create and add assignments from this screen!
Your options on this screen may vary depending on the program you are using:
- Wonders and Open Court
- “Create Custom Assignments”
- StudySync
- “Add StudySync Assignments”
- Actively Learn
- "Add Actively Learn Assignments”
- All other Programs
- “Add Pre-Built Assignments”
- “Create Custom Assignments”

To unpair a class:
1. Follow the same steps above to launch the McGraw Hill LTI 1.3 app.
2. Schoology will open a window and display the currently paired classes. From this screen, you simply need to choose the Unpair button for the necessary class(es).
Important! – If a Schoology® class section is un-linked or deleted prior to unpairing it from the McGraw Hill class, you will not be able to fully unpair it.
You MUST unpair the classes before deleting or unlinking the Schoology® class section. Otherwise, you will need to contact Customer Support to unpair the classes.
This also applies to Linked classes. You MUST unpair your classes within the McGraw Hill LTI® 1.3 app. First, before unlinking any classes. Failure to do so will both break the connection to Schoology® and prevent you from pairing the classes again later.
